Church teams do not need to become stained glass conservators to improve stewardship. A consistent visual record and a few careful observations can reveal change before a condition becomes urgent.
Observe from the same locations
Take annual photographs from consistent interior and exterior viewpoints. Similar lighting and framing make bowing, cracks, discoloration and exterior-covering changes easier to compare.
Record water, movement and impact
Note damp sills, condensation, rattling, fallen fragments and any nearby construction or impact event. Do not press, tape or clean unstable areas.
- New cracks
- Panel movement
- Water staining
- Loose ties
- Cloudy protective glazing
- Changes after storms
Keep records with the building
Store photographs, previous scopes and completed-work documents where future facilities teams can find them. Continuity matters because stained glass decisions span generations of caretakers.
